Barrio Science: Chicanismo and Speculative Experiments in Art

Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH)

September 26, 2026 – January 3, 2027

LANCASTER, CA – The Lancaster Museum of Art and History (MOAH) presents Barrio Science: Chicanismo and Speculative Experiments in Art, a group exhibition featuring nine contemporary artists whose work explores the beauty, creativity, and resourcefulness of urban communities through experimental approaches to artmaking.

Curated by Herber Rodriguez, the exhibition examines themes of cultural identity, healing, spirituality, and the often-overlooked labor that shapes life in the barrio. Drawing from Chicano/a/x and Latine cultural traditions, the participating artists transform everyday materials and familiar imagery into works that challenge conventional perspectives and invite viewers to consider new possibilities through the question, “What if?”

The exhibition features works by Abel Alejandre, Alfonso Gonzalez Jr., Felicia “Fe” Montes, Jaime Muñoz, noé olivas, Rubén Ortiz-Torres, Verónica Preciado, Natalia Rocafuerte, and Jacqueline Valenzuela.

Presented in MOAH’s Main Gallery and South Gallery, Barrio Science highlights the intersection of cultural memory, artistic experimentation, and speculative imagination within contemporary Chicano/a/x and Latine artistic practices.
