Painted, melted sculpted and photographed. Just some of the adjectives used by curator/artist Michael Massenburg to describe the many ways a collective of Southern California artists will use 45’s (vinyl records) as a medium in an upcoming art exhibition. Art meets vinyl in this showcase of 45 of some of Southern California’s finest artists, creating one-of-a-kind designs using the 45 as a starting point. “My instructions to the artists were simple,” Massenburg said. “Use the 45 as a starting point. Other than that there were no limits.” The opening reception on April 9 at Twenty Miles East Gallery (20 miles east of LA) coincides with the 2nd Saturday Pomona Art Walk.

A concept of Robert Rodriguez, a 33 year-old record collector/seller from Hawthorne, who has been collecting vinyl records for over 20 years, and has a fondness for 60’s soul. Rodriguez says he was sorting records in his storage one day, and came across a pile of cracked, broken, scratched and warped records. Instead of throwing them in the trash bin, he decided to give them to an artist and have them create an art piece. “The first people I thought of were my two new artist acquaintances – Michael Massenburg and Overton Loyd. I sent Michael and Overton a message with some vague details, and in idea was born.”

Massenburg and Rodriguez enlisted the help of Stephen Tisdale of Orange County, and have been working on the concept and presentation of the show since last year. Massenburg had participated in a group exhibition at Twenty Miles East Gallery last October, and thought it would be an excellent location for the show. He contacted them with the idea, they agreed and asked him to come on as curator. Future plans for the show include a website dedicated to the art and participating artists of the 45 Show, and a catalog that will be available this summer.
