Drawn to You: Intimate Portraits brings together seven artists with individual approaches to both the medium of drawing and the representation of human identity: ABEL ALEJANDRE’s characters struggle against hatred and betrayal and are rendered in a highly refined surface of crosshatched graphite lines. KRISTI LIPPIRE’s cat drawings utilize humor and absurdity, prompting viewers to question their own realities. BRIAN MALLMAN’s economical drawings on wood explore how gestures and non-verbal communication are used to establish social hierarchy. CLAUDIA NIETO’s conceptual text drawings playfully address how intimacy in a relationship can allow for similarities and differences between partners. MEI XIAN QUI’s dream scenarios whimsically present an introspective look at the self, the alter ego and how these identities relate to others. NICOLA VRUWINK’s Sad Men series depict stock market traders reacting to the dismal economy and simultaneously serve as surrogates for the artist’s own feelings of loss and despair in the art world. MEGANN ZWIERLEIN’s graphite on canvas portraits of her daughters continue an historic theme of domesticity and the challenges women artists encounter when seeking to balance traditional roles with the expression of one’s self.
